I am a parrot lover and have been for my entire life. I enjoy the daily care, interaction, playtime, feeding, and handraising of my FIDs aka feathered kids. I am a huge advocate of proper bird ownership. I raise a select number of parrot babies each year, and work diligently to find them their perfect forever home.
My biggest word of advice is: "Don't buy an unweaned parrot baby!" Don't believe it when people say a parrot will not bond with you unless you handfeed it yourself, that is parrot poo poo, to be exact. I have had wild caught breeders warm up to me in less than a week, and perch comfortably on my shoulder.
My second biggest word of advice is: "Be prepared, never buy a parrot on impulse!" Impulse buying all too often leads to a sad ending for the parrot. They are soon forgotten and left confined to their cage once the newness wears off. Then the trouble issues begin when your parrot, whom you showered with affection initially, begins to act out because all of a sudden, he or she is no longer the center of attention. Owning a parrot is very similar to adopting a child, only this child will forever remain a 2-4 yr old feathered child. They will require your LIFELONG commitment! If you cannot give this commitment, please choose a gold fish, they are known to only live a few years instead of up to 60 or 80 years as some species of parrots will do.
